We were, fortunately, protected from its brunt by Phuket, Phi Phi and Koh Ka Island. No one on our island died, but several of our people lost family and friends who were working on other islands. We took some (very raw) footage with an old digital camera and spliced it together with some photos today to show how Koh Siboya has bounced back.

Day One: We arrived in Ko Tao (Turtle Island) on the 2nd of April, after a long long bus, train, minibus and then boat trip; leaving Kanchanaburi at 4pm and reaching Ko Tao at 10am the following morning. On arrival, we were swamped by taxi drivers harrassing us to take us to various guesthouses and beach resorts. We walked around for a while, trying to find an ATM, being constantly harrassed by taxi drivers offering to charge 'only' 400baht for the trip (100baht each, which is 2 pound = ripp-off!); after finding 6 broken ATM machines,to our relief we found aworking one and could start our Ko Tao holiday. We bargained and bargained with various taxi drivers and managed to get the price down to 160baht(40 baht each) which we felt was still a rip-off, but the best we would get in such a touristy area. Ko Tao is by far the most tourist destination we've been to so far, but we expected that, and Ko Tao was meant to be a weeks relaxation holiday within our 4month travelling holiday, because it was Ben's last few days with us before heading back to England. Unfortunatley the first day in Ko Tao was the best whether we experienced on the Island. On our first day welay around on the beach, looked around Sairee Village ...

There were loads of shops, bars, restaurants and resorts open and the area we were in (Ton Sai) was buzzing with activity. The is amazing in light of the fact that the island was uninhabitable only 7 months ago. Saying that once you went further inland there was more evidence of what happened in terms of areas of rubble and damaged buildings but there was a lot of work going on to clean it all up. The main centre is a lovely maze of narrow streets and there isn't a McDonalds or Starbucks in sight ... There are no cars on the island so the locals deliver people, food and supplies on carts attached to motorbikes. The beaches are the nicest I've seen so far in Thailand. I had hoped to do some volunteering but never quite got around to it ... I may be wrong but there seemed to be plenty of locals building and renovating day and night and I almost felt that you were giving as much help by just being a tourist and spending money doing touristy things to help to ...

The bay had an array of tour operators offering the trip to Koh Pha Ngan at a wide variety of prices. The cheapest left at 1pm, eventually reaching the island mid afternoon. Koh Pha Ngan is home to the Full Moon Party which started back in '88 for someones birthday party. Ever since people have celebrated the tradition, they now have Half-Moon and Black-Moon, all throughout the month. The parties attract anything from 8000 to 30000 clubbers. Unfortunately or fortunately we had just missed the last Full Moon, and having studied the free glossy brochures of the island during the 1 hour windy ferry trip we had made our minds up, we were heading for the isolated beach of Haad Khom in the north of the island. From arrival the taxi could only take us as far as Chaloklum as the road then turned into 4WD territory. We had to hike the final 2km up and down the mountainous dirt track. Sweating desperately we finally stumbled across the sign for the Coral Bay Bungalows and after a brief inspection of the other options on the beach we decided to sleep there for the night. Entry: "16 February Ko Kradan is not serviced by any passenger ferries; the only way to get to the island is to take a 4-island snorkelling package tour (Ko Hai, Ko Muk, Ko Kradan, Ko Rok) and hop off the tour speedboat with your luggage when it gets to Ko Kradan. Given that we would only be travelling one-way and missing the final dive stop at Ko Rok, our tour tickets were discounted by about 40% of the usual tour cost. The first stop on the tour was snorkelling off the boat on a reef off Ko Hai. Brilliantly clear water and healthy coral rates this possibly the best snorkelling we've seen in SE Asia. Next we stopped at the entrance to the Emerald Cave (Morakot Cave) on Ko Muk. We had read and heard a fair bit about this stop: the open-air cave is accessible only by swimming or kayaking through an 80m winding tunnel in total darkness, hopefully avoiding the resident bats. Fortunately, you are provided with a lifejacket which means that the swimming is easy. There were 3 guides on our tour who entered the tunnel with flashlights so navigating the tunnel was a matter of swimming in total darkness in the direction of the next torchlight. Luckily, Koh Mook was the perfect island for letting go of some tension. Upon first arrival, we were a bit put off by the island. Although the Tsunami was a few years ago, the people of Koh Mook are still rebuilding. It was amazing to see the traces of devastation that lay throughout the island. While most of the resorts and hotels have been refurbished/rebuilt, it was evident that the peoples homes (or many times huts) were not privy to the same speedy service. Yet despite these poor conditions, life goes on for these island folk and they seem extremely happy. The children who passed us on their way home from school were always full of smiles and quick "hellos." As a constant reminder too, we saw numerous brand new Tsunami Evacuation signs posted throughout the island. It was as if they were installed following the catastrophe, and we could only wonder how the people coped a few years ago. Despite the somewhat unkempt village, the rest of the island is gorgeous. Anyway, factory tours, to me, are not a selling point of Thailand; they are rather boring. We quickly finished up our do-it-yourself tour and let it be known that we were ready for lunch ourselves. It's taken me over 3 days and a huge amount of frustration but late the other night I did it. Couldn't believe it, a bit late to be put on my 'things to do before I'm 30' list but still, I was so chuffed. I screamed at the top of my voice when I realised I'd done all the sides, jumped up and down on the bed and then did a lap of honour around the room. Probably woke everyone up in our block and the surrounding bungalows but nevermind. :) Lee's foot seems to be alright, there's no sign of damage and he's not feeling ill or anything so fingers crossed it's all alright. Since then we've rented a scooter and have been around the island checking out all the other beaches. We also went into Saladan, which is the main town here on Ko Lanta. It's right by where the ferry comes in so it's full of travel agents and tour organisers, tat shops, internet places and food places. There's some really cool little market stalls about. Lee needed to swap his book so we had a little look around some of the stalls. In Trang we headed to a travel agent where we organised a minibus to Hat Yao (70B), a private boat to Koh Libong (800B) and three nights at Libong Beach Resort (1000B, coldwater, fan), one of the more expensive places we've stayed at on this trip. Koh Libong doesn't have particularly nice beaches, or a great many tourist attractions, but what it does have is dugongs. I've always been fascinated by dugongs and their close cousins, manatees, but never thought I'd get the chance to see one in the wild. The day after arriving we arranged to go dugong hunting, which involves jumping on a longtail at 0800, heading around the corner for about 30 minutes, anchoring up and then waiting. And waiting. And waiting. After about 30 minutes I saw something break the surface and then disappear quickly, but it was too small to have been a sea cow, probably a turtle. After another 30 minutes or so, the captain yelled and pointed and we turned just in time to the splash of something disappearing. We thought we would be sharing a room on the carriage with two strangers, however, it turned out the whole carriage was one large sleeper room. The seats were converted into bunks, and only a curtain protected your modesty. Surprisingly it wasn't too bad. The only annoying point was a drunk middle aged North American man, who was rude to Bryan. He ignored me completely -- luckily! Anyways sleep didn't come easy for me on the train, since it stopped and started a bit, but I did manage about four hours. Bryan didn't do much better. We woke from about half four onwards, since we were supposedly due to arrive at 6.30. Long story short the train arrived around 8.00. The bus was a surprise, a large coach and comfy. It was decked out in pink and blue and was very rock and roll. I should mention the tour company "Sangserm" who were really good and efficient. "paradise"... imagine clear turquoise waters, soft white sandy beaches, and a wonderful clear blue sky... it was the most beautiful beach we've seen so far.. by far... the whole island itself is tiny. if there was a road, you could probably walk the circumfrence of the island in a couple hours. you could definitely walk across it from one end to the other in about 20 minutes... the beaches are lined with simple "resorts" or what looks more like a cluster of bungalows... nothing fancy, just simple and "rustic". BUT, it wasn't cheap (in thai standards... in US standards, for what you get, it would be unimaginably cheap... but eunice and i have quickly adjusted to the relativity here)... at 600 baht (about $16 ...

When I first got the Xoom about a week ago I turned it on and I really wasn't blown away. I use lots of devices, and my first impression of the Xoom just wasn't stellar. However, I could see the potential, and so I kept using it, I got some apps, I started to learn the interface and the depth of the features.

Sometime during day 2 of using the Xoom it really hit me. The Xoom and the iPad are like chess and checkers. When you first start playing chess (or trying to use the Xoom, in my amazing analogy) you feel overwhelmed and confused. You can't really do things smoothly, you don't understand the options, it just is not a great first impression. On the other hand, your first game of checkers (or using the iPad) is probably going to be pretty smooth. It isn't complex, most all the options and concepts are obvious and easy to understand and your first game is going to be pretty similar to your hundredth.

However, as you start to understand the Xoom (or chess) it really starts to grow on you. You understand what you can do, how to do it, the amazing depth and possibility in the device. While the iPad (or checkers) players are still having roughly the same experience time after time, with the Xoom every day of experience with the device makes it more powerful and enjoyable to use. In the end, the Xoom becomes a much better device than any of the competition; it just takes some time for you to learn what it is capable of and how to make the most of it.

As you can tell from the last three paragraphs I wasn't exactly impressed with the Xoom to start. I wasn't even sure it would replace my current device for most things. However, by day two I started to really "get" the device.

This first happened when I needed to look over and annotate a PDF someone had sent me. I downloaded it from my email, and was able to actually put it in the Xoom memory where-ever I wanted in whatever folder I wanted. Wow, that is kind of cool, can't do that on the competition. Next, I was able to open it in a PDF reader, using this fancy program (which I easily found on the marketplace). I went through and did what I needed (with an amazing free hand drawing tool, it was a snap!), then I jumped back over to email, attached the newly edited PDF and sent it away. Now maybe I just never tried hard enough, but I don't think that is possible on some of the competition. That freedom to download files, do what you need, and then send them away again. On the iPad apps I have used it always requires the files to be in something like Dropbox, which is fine, except it would have made what I did impossible without using a computer.

Another "WOW" moment came when I wanted to get some ebooks onto the device. Now, on my Apple products this is generally a pain, you hook the device to the computer, go open itunes, you go to a certain tab, and a certain area, and a certain feature, and if you do it all right you can drag your ebooks over to the reader. It was rather simpler on the Xoom. For the ebooks I had on my computer I just dropped them in Dropbox, then I downloaded them on the Xoom, and using the Xoom file manager I easily moved them into a new "Books" folder I made in the Documents folder. Fast, quick, and simple and done on the device, rather than on the PC.

However, what really blew me away was when I wanted some ebooks off the web. Using the regular browser I was able to just download them directly from the internet onto the device. I then used the file manager again and simply moved them to the right folder. This really did impress me, my tablet was uncoupled from the PC, I could browse the full web, download things, and then make use of them all without ever needing to tether to my computer. I was hooked.

With my new excitement at not requiring my computer to use my tablet I headed over to an Android App development forum. Here developers had posted lots of cool apps that were in beta or that they wanted to promote. On competing devices the only way to get an app is through the sanctioned and controlled portal, not so on Android (and thus Xoom). Using the Xoom browser I bounced around the forum, I downloaded beta apps, and then I was able to easily install them. Again, this is all on the device, and these were not approved apps, awesome.

Another example of something that impressed me came on my third day with the device. I was using the CNN app (which is free and tablet optimized, go check it out) and I watched a video of a story that I thought was really interesting, but it was one of those that is only a teaser, and the rest is on another site. When I hit these videos on my iPad I just have to try to remember to watch them later on a computer, because they are inevitably flash based. Not so on the Xoom, I typed in the address, the flash loaded up perfectly, and I was watching the video in full screen with no trouble.

This process of growing more comfortable with the device and learning what it could do continued over the last few days. At every turn I would find something amazing that just wasn't possible on competing tablets. I discovered the glory of widgets (custom little desktop things to show you the weather, or news, or whatever). I found some live wallpaper (moving animated wallpaper, that can change and adapt to things, such as the weather). I just kept finding new awesome features and uses.

One thing I want to touch on that is perhaps more technical than the rest of my review is the screen. I use my tablets to read, I started using ebooks a while back and I found tablets to work pretty well for that. I do most of my reading at night before bed, so the backlit screen is actually helpful versus a traditional reader. Anyway, one of the things that has always bothered me about the iPad as an ereader is that the pixel density (that is the number of pixels (or square blocks of color) in each inch of screen space) is very low. The iPad has somewhere around 130PPI (pixels per inch). It was so low that it really did give me noticeable eye strain to read on the device, I could see the pixels, and it really just wasn't a great reading experience. This was so pronounced that for the last few months I had actually been doing most of my reading on a 4th generation iPod Touch. It had a smaller screen, but a higher pixel density.

Anyway, the Xoom has a very noticeable increase in resolution and pixel density. With its higher resolution it has roughly 33% more pixels than the iPad, roughly 300,000 additional pixels. This is something you can see immediately when looking at any text. It is a lot smoother and easier to read on the Xoom. However, the other side of this is that the iPad has a different display type, that does have better viewing angles and color/contrast. In my case I don't really care, I find the pixel density to be 1000 times more important than small color improvements or viewing angles but I feel I should mention it.

My point in these last two paragraphs is that the Xoom is a much better device for displaying text than any of the lower resolution competition. If you are looking for a tablet to read your newspaper and books and websites on, then you definitely should give the Xoom or other higher resolution tablets a look. In my opinion the resolution on the iPad/iPad 2 just does not cut it for text.

Welp, this is really starting to get long, so I guess I should wrap it up. I know this isn't like the usual review you read, but I really wanted to give people an idea of the experience of using the Xoom versus just giving the facts and the breakdown and the comparisons. The Xoom is a device that improves exponentially the more you use it. After a few days of use I really can't imagine returning to the constraints and frustrations of the competition. However, on my first day I wasn't that impressed, so be sure to stick with it and get used to it. Now I am off to make dinner, and to accompany me I am going to take my Xoom, which is streaming live video thanks to the wonderful inclusion of flash, the competition is going to stay sitting on the shelf (probably for the foreseeable future).

I just want to mention that I am giving the Xoom four stars because it is not perfect. As a reference after using the Xoom I would probably give the iPad / iPad 2 three stars. There are still improvements that can be made to tablets. I really feel like Android and Xoom are on the right track, but this is still not what I would call a perfect tablet, it is just the best that is available right now (for my uses).
